DEPARTMENT OF INDEPENDENT STUDIES
Recognizing that all who desire to become effectively equipped for ministry cannot attend classes on a regular basis, an independent studies department is provided. Those desiring to register in courses offered each semester can apply for participation in this program by contacting the Office of Independent Studies. The student taking courses through the independent study program is required to read the syllabus or text book, listen to the tapes, and submit the work for each course in a manner consistent with the requirement of that course. Because the student is not required to attend classes on a regular basis, the written work requirements are more stringent than that expected of students attending classes. The number of students admitted to our independent studies department is limited by the availability of staff and personnel to facilitate the program.
The Internet has opened up a major highway in the area of communications and our independent studies program is preparing now to enter that highway with courses to be offered. We will begin slow but envision a world wide ministry in the near future.
CATEGORIES OF INDEPENDENT STUDIES STUDENTS
There are two categories of Independent Studies students currently enrolled in this department.
We have local students that take some courses on campus and supplement the on campus classes with independent studies. Because the college is in the early stages of development, not all courses can be offered each semester, so, students are able to pick-up needed courses through independent studies. These students pick up their material and submit their work while they are on campus attending other classes.
Then, we have students from other states and nations who are unable to attend classes on campus but are able to become equipped for the work of ministry through the Independent Studies Department. These students are presently able to receive and submit materials through the mail.
As mentioned earlier in this Handbook, independent studies by way of the Internet is on the horizon. Equipment has been purchased and is being installed while personnel are being trained to provide independent studies via the internet. This program will begin with a limited number of students and as God provides the workers to facilitate the program the ministry will become world wide.
Thus, regardless on one’s geographical location, he or she is able to become better equipped, or even earn a degree through our independent studies department.
A handbook is designed to provide inquiring students with information concerning the provisions and requirements for independent study.
GUIDELINES FOR INDEPENDENT STUDIES
The following guidelines have been established for the Independent Studies program:
1. The program operates separate from the semester structure.
The independent studies program will operate separate from the classroom structure of established semester dates. Due to the nature of the program it will function year round with enrollment open as long as there are volunteer personnel to facilitate the program and materials. Thus, a student may request enrollment at anytime.
2. The program is only open to credit students (no audit students).
Because of limited personnel the independent studies program will be limited to students taking the course for credit. Audit only students will not be accepted into the program at this time. The time and work required to provide this program is the major factor contributing to this requirement at this time. Therefore a student must enroll in the Certificate Program or in the Degree Program.
3. Students must complete studies in a six month period.
Each student will be required to complete all course requirements in a 6 month period that begins with the sending of the course materials to the student. This provides ample time for the student to complete all reading assignments, and submit the required written work. An “F” will be entered on the transcript of the student not meeting this requirement. There is no minimal time limit imposed allowing a student to work as quickly as he or she is able.
4. Submission of required work.
All work is to be submitted in total upon completion of the course assignments. However the student must bear in mind the date of required completion and have all materials in by the required date.
5. A student can not be enrolled in more than three Independent Studies Courses at a time (except through Administrative approval in unusual cases relative to graduation).
Independent study students may not be enrolled in more than three Independent courses at a time. This limitation is intended to eliminate a student being overloaded with course work and not being able to complete his or her work in a timely manner.
6. Independent Study is only open in courses for which materials are already available (No independent study will be offered in courses that are in the process of being taught for the first time.)
Courses offered in the independent studies program at the present time will be limited to courses, which have been previously taught at Channel Islands, and for which there are appropriate study materials. A student may not enroll in independent studies for a current class room course for which complete study materials are not available.
7. A Student may withdraw from a course during the six month period following enrollment.
In the event that a student should withdraw from a course, that student is prohibited from re-enrolling in that same course for a period of 6 months from the date of the previous enrollment, the normal time it takes for course completion. However, this does not prohibit the student from enrolling in another course.
8. Independent Studies Students are required to read the syllabus or textbook assigned by the course. There may also be other reading assignments made by the course instructor.
9. Course requirements may vary from course to course. Specific course requirements will be found in the Independent Studies Handbook.
10. Each student must also successfully pass the final exam for each course.
ENROLLMENT AND COURSE MATERIALS
The Independent Studies and Publications Departments are located on campus in the west end of the General Offices Building.
Independent Studies Department
Students desiring to enroll in the Independent Studies Program must do so in the office of Independent Studies rather than the Administration Office. Course materials are to be obtained from the Independent Studies office. All work is to be submitted to that office. If a student has a question or desires information concerning a matter related to an independent studies course, he or she is to contact the Independent Studies Office rather than the instructor of the course.
There is an enrollment form in the back of the Independent Studies Handbook. It must be completed and turned in to the Independent Studies Department. That form can also be found by clicking here. Students desiring academic counsel can arrange an appointment with a counselor through the office of Independent Studies.
NOTE: The Independent Studies Office is closed during registration for the Spring and Fall Semester in order to free up volunteers for the registration process.
